A Sigma 23mm f/1.4 DC DN is in the works

Ever since Viltrox launched their 23mm f/1.4 lens, I always wondered if Sigma will also cover this focal. The DC DN lenses were very well received. I own the 30mm f/1.4 DC DN. I’ve also tested the 16mm and 56mm models and I can tell you sharpness and bokeh rendering are among the best out there.

According to SonyAlphaRumors, Sigma is getting ready to expand their APS-C trinity. The new 23mm f/1.4 lens will appeal to photographers who enjoy the 35mm full frame look. Measuring 76.9mm, it will be just a bit longer than my 30mm lens, but it will retain the 52mm filter size.

Weight difference will be more noticeable: the 23mm will weigh 340g, 80g more than the 30mm. Sigma’s biggest and heaviest lens in the line-up, the 16mm f/1.4 DC DN, measures 92.3mm and weighs 405g.

The upcoming 23mm f/1.4 DC DN will be the second biggest and heaviest in the line-up

The most affordable lens in the range is the 30mm f/1.4 DC DN, which can be purchased for as little as $269. Since the 35mm full frame look is very desirable, I suspect Sigma will price the 23mm f/1.4 DC DN closer to $399, just $50 cheaper than the 16mm.

Will it be a good enough lens for APS-C users to ignore the Viltrox AF 23mm f/1.4 E and its $279 price tag? The good thing is we won’t have to wait that much to find out.

Update: Sigma has announced the 23mm f/1.4 DC DN lens. My pricing prediction was way off: it costs $549.
