The first lens I ever bought for my Sony a5000 was the Sigma 30mm f/2.8 DN Art. The first one I got for my Sony a6300 was the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN. If I were just buying a Sony APS-C camera, the new Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN would be on my shortlist.
There’s not much to hate about this little lens. It follows the classic Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 that APS-C DSLR users were recommending left and right. Since it doesn’t bring any stabilisation, the new lens is smaller and lighter (just 10 grams heavier than the excellent 56mm f/1.4 DC DN).
It’s not optically perfect, but it does hit a sweet spot when it comes to price: €500. You could buy two Sigmas for the price of one Sony 16-55mm f/2.8 (€1019) and the 17-70mm f/2.8 Tamron costs 70% more (€850). To put it even more in perspective, Sigma’s first mirrorless APS-C zoom lens is cheaper even than the Sony 16-70mm f/4 (€756).
Compact, light, good image quality. I already love it.
