I look at recovery software as insurance. It’s good to have one, but it’s better to not have to use one. Unfortunately, SD cards happen to fail and a relatively new one decided to do just that.
I don’t know why I decided to install SanDisk’s recovery app when I bought an Extreme Pro Card a few weeks ago. Perhaps a little voice in my head kept saying “you never know”. Well, now I know.
While I’m disappointed a new card (less than 1000 shots) managed to corrupt some photos, I’m more than satisfied with SanDisk’s RescuePRO Deluxe. I managed to get every photo back (though it recovered them by changing the file extension from .arw to .sr2), including the one of a Black Redstart you see above.
So next time you buy an SD card, don’t immediately throw away everything that came with it. You might find some software that will help you down the road.
